A New Boiler Room for a 24/7/365 Operation at the Boston Airport

LSG Sky Chefs supplies meals and catering for airlines routed through Boston Airport. The company uses low pressure steam for kettles, industrial dishwashers, and domestic heat exchangers. Because of the nature of the business, operations in their facility do not cease, so the boiler runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Naturally, this makes it difficult to make any improvements or changes to the boiler room — but Powerhouse was there to make sure everything went smoothly.

The Problem

The existing boiler equipment in LSG Sky Chefs’ facility was past its life expectancy and the water softening system was not in use. As a result, the domestic water heating system was inefficient, uncontrolled, and difficult to maintain. In addition, the non stop operation of the facility made it impossible to shut down the boiler room for any long period of time, necessitating a smooth transition to new equipment.

The Solution

LSG Sky Chefs reached out to Powerhouse Equipment about buying a new boiler and overhauling their system. Powerhouse supplied preliminary and final project drawings and engineering support, and installed a low pressure boiler, a blowdown separator, a condensate receiver, a feedwater system, and a water softening system. Powerhouse also set up the new boiler room and supplied an operations manual so the company could manage the transition and continue to monitor and maintain their new boiler room properly.

There was one snag to the project: the boiler purchased by LSG Sky Chefs was less than an inch shorter than the doorway it needed to go through to be placed in the boiler room. Always the one to find a creative solution, Powerhouse modified the boiler with rollers in order to allow the boiler to be installed with only a forklift and an HD ratchet setup.

The Results

The new boiler installed by Powerhouse proved to be the solution to the issues LSG Sky Chefs were facing. They were finally brought up to compliance in regards to plumbing, electrical, and boiler room codes. Most importantly, the new setup can meet the heating capacity of the facility — a crucial factor during those frigid Boston winters!
